Learning Beyond the Classroom

At CCP, we believe that learning a language goes far beyond the classroom. That is why we want to organise more and more outings around the city, giving our students the opportunity to discover Barcelona while practising Spanish or Catalan in a natural and authentic way.

Walking through its streets, stopping for a coffee, sharing some tapas, visiting historical landmarks, or browsing local shops are all real-life situations that allow students to put what they have learned in class into practice. These experiences help them expand their vocabulary, build confidence when communicating, and gain a deeper understanding of Barcelona’s culture, traditions, and everyday life.

Our most recent outing was a wonderful example of this approach to language learning. Accompanied by our tour guide, Sara, we explored Barcelona’s iconic Gothic Quarter, discovering its history, architectural heritage, and some of the fascinating stories that make this neighbourhood one of the city’s most remarkable places.

The visit became even more engaging thanks to our teacher, Júlia, who designed a series of fun and interactive activities that encouraged students to use the new words and expressions they were learning throughout Sara’s explanations. Through small challenges, questions, and conversations, everyone took an active part, practising the language in a meaningful and authentic setting.

Learning beyond the classroom offers opportunities that simply cannot be recreated within four walls. Listening to spontaneous conversations, reading street signs, asking questions in a shop, ordering in a café, or interacting with local people allows students to connect language learning with the culture, history, and everyday life of the city.

In a city like Barcelona, these outings provide an additional opportunity to understand its unique linguistic and cultural identity. Our students can practise the language they are learning – Spanish or Catalan – in real-life situations while discovering how both languages coexist in everyday life and form an essential part of the city’s identity.

We will continue to invest in this type of learning experience because we are convinced that learning a language also means living it. Every walk, every conversation, and every shared experience become an opportunity to learn in a way that is natural, motivating, and truly memorable.
