WORLD FOOD DAY

A global call to eradicate hunger

Every 16 October, World Food Day is celebrated, a date promoted by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) since 1979 to raise awareness of the need to eradicate hunger and promote more sustainable food systems. In 2025, this day is commemorated under the slogan ‘Hand in hand for better food and a better future.’ The theme calls for international cooperation to ensure healthy and accessible food for the entire world population.

According to the United Nations’ State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report, between 638 and 720 million people suffered from hunger in 2024, representing up to 8.8% of the world’s population. Although a slight improvement is expected, it is estimated that 512 million people will still be suffering from hunger in 2030, almost 60% of them in Africa.

The data show significant imbalances in food. Enough food is produced for everyone, yet malnutrition, obesity, waste and job insecurity continue to exist in the food chain. Furthermore, hunger affects the most vulnerable people, i.e. those living in regions affected by conflict, economic crisis or extreme weather events. Africa remains the most affected continent, with 20% of the population suffering from famine.

UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency) plays a key role in this context, guaranteeing access to food and drinking water for millions of refugees and displaced persons. In collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), it distributes daily rations covering around 2,100 calories per person.

This day reminds us that ending hunger is not only a goal, but a shared responsibility that requires the involvement of various actors: governments, organisations and citizens. Only in this way can we build a more just, supportive and sustainable world.
